Why did Jesus die on the cross so quickly?

He says in the Gospel of John that he doesn't die, but gives up his spirit (19:30 "and gave up the ghost", which is an unusual way of describing death). Pascal says it proves that Jesus' death was voluntary and that he let go his spirit instead of agonizing like the two thieves.
